Groups bundle together related Sources.
Groups can take many different names in different orgainzations. Hubs, Groups, Companies, Targets, etc. are all terms that have been used on DataForge projects to name the concept that is referred to within the platform as a "Group". Simply put, a Group is a self contained bundle of Sources.
In the example seen on the Overview page there were two groups, Company 1 and Company 2. Each "Company" is separate and never relates directly to the other.
Two Groups of Sources with a few shared Related Sources
Making A Group
To create or manage Groups, open the Groups page from the main menu -> Templates -> Groups.
Really, the Group is just a bit of text that helps name Sources. This is reflected in the fact that the Groups settings page in DataForge has only two fields: Name and Description. Below we create a Group for Company 1 by simply naming it "Company 1".
Applying A Group To A Source
The group can then be applied to the relevant Sources by using the "Group" control on the Source Settings page. For the Company 1 example we have been working with, both the Company 1 Sales Order Detail and Company 1 Sales Order Header Sources would go into the Company 1 Group.
Applying the Company 1 Group to a Source
These Groups will be extremely important to the Cloning process. Users will choose to Clone an entire Group and recreate EVERYTHING inside of it with a new Group.
Grouping together Sources helps logically separate entities within DataForge. In the next section about Source Name Templates, we will investigate how DataForge allow users to dynamically insert the GROUP name into Source names.
Cloning a Group
A Group can be cloned from the Groups page using the options menu on the Group record.
The Group can also be from the Group settings page.
Deleting a Group
Deleting a Group deletes all of the objects that the Group is attached to as well so be sure you want to delete prior to doing so. To see a list of the objects that will be deleted, navigate to the Applied Objects tab.
To delete a group, open the Group from the main menu in the Templates -> Groups option. Select the Delete button.
Users will see a warning appear that all data (and objects) will be erased. If the Group delete is still desired, check the box to confirm and re-select the Delete option.
Users are brought to one final warning and confirmation. To finalize the delete, retype the name of the Group in the text box and then select YES to delete.
After typing the Group name and clicking the YES button, the Group is deleted along with all objects attached to it.
